Paper ideas for PSID-CDS
- school achievement, success; qualities of school like being held back, quality of teachers, expectations of children - sort of goes into identity argument where if not good at school may be more likely to search for identity in personal relationships
- family environment - siblings, marriage, transitions, resources, expectations
- peers - either measurement of friendship or more time diary stuff
- is is possible that I know the parents' sexual, relationship history? number of partners, age at debut...hope so...or even siblings?
- gender roles? something I was interested in but can't do with Ed's data, looks like i at least have it at the household level
So really there are a couple of theories I want to explore. These theories will probably be examined in different papers though.
- Conflict/strain - adolescents seek out romantic and sexual relationships to make up for what they are lacking from home relationships
- varaibles could include - marital quality, parent-child and sibling relationships, economic resources, friendship quality, community or neighborhood quality, substance use from parents
- Identity - given competing demands of development, adolescents must determine who they are by establishing their identity
- their success or competence in a variety of areas may make them more or less likely to seek out certain experiences and relationships
- academic achievement, sports, peer relationships, expectations from parents and teachers and self, gender roles - all may be different domains that individuals pull from in determining who they are
- romantic relationships hasn't been considered an identity establishment outlet though this would test if all others are low or lean in a certain direction, adolescents may be more likely to invest their time in romantic relationships as that is where they can successfully establish an identity
- Context - great neighborhood variables
- including safety, size etc...
- Intergenerational transmission of norms regarding romantic and sexual relationships
- oh would love to be able to link parents' behaviors to their adolescents' behaviors
- teenage pregnancy/births; birth control use
